The technology defined by the ZigBee specification is intended to be simpler and less expensive than other wireless personal area networks WPANssuch as Bluetooth or more general wireless networking such as Wi-Fi.

Applications include wireless light switches, home energy monitorstraffic management systems, and other consumer and industrial equipment that requires short-range low-rate wireless data transfer. ZigBee is typically used in low data rate applications that require long battery life and secure networking ZigBee networks are secured by bit symmetric encryption keys.

ZigBee was conceived instandardized inand revised in The name refers to the waggle dance of honey bees after their return to the beehive. ZigBee is a low-cost, low-power, wireless mesh network standard targeted at battery-powered devices in wireless control and monitoring applications.

ZigBee delivers low-latency communication. ZigBee chips are typically integrated with radios and with microcontrollers. ZigBee operates in the industrial, scientific and medical ISM radio bands: 2. The specification includes four additional key components: network layer, application layer, Zigbee Device Objects ZDOs and manufacturer-defined application objects.

ZDOs are responsible for some tasks, including keeping track of device roles, managing requests to join a network, as well as device discovery and security.

The ZigBee network layer natively supports both star and tree networks, and generic mesh networking. Every network must have one coordinator device. Within star networks, the coordinator must be the central node.

Both trees and meshes allow the use of ZigBee routers to extend communication at the network level. Another defining feature of ZigBee is facilities for carrying out secure communications, protecting establishment and transport of cryptographic keys, ciphering frames, and controlling device. It builds on the basic security framework defined in IEEE ZigBee-style self-organizing ad-hoc digital radio networks were conceived in the s.

The IEEE In Septemberthe ZigBee Specification was announced, obsoleting the stack [5] The specification replaces the message and key—value pair structure used in the stack with a cluster library. The library is a set of standardised commands, organised under groups known as clusters with names such as Smart Energy, Home Automation, and ZigBee Light Link.

In JanuaryZigBee Alliance renamed the library to Dotdot and announced it as a new protocol to be represented by an emoticon :. They also announced it will now additionally run over other network types using Internet Protocol [7] and will interconnect with other standards such as Thread.

Zigbee Pro, also known as ZigBeewas finalized in ZigBee protocols are intended for embedded applications requiring low power consumption and tolerating low data rates.

The resulting network will use very little power—individual devices must have a battery life of at least two years to pass ZigBee certification. ZigBee is not for situations with high mobility among nodes. Hence, it is not suitable for tactical ad hoc radio networks in the battlefield, where high data rate and high mobility is present and needed.

Established inthe ZigBee Alliance is a group of companies that maintain and publish the ZigBee standard. The organization publishes application profiles that allow multiple OEM vendors to create interoperable products. The relationship between IEEE Over the years, the Alliance's membership has grown to over companies, including the likes of Comcast, Ikea, Legrand, Samsung SmartThingsand Amazon.

Develop your product with the Zigbee Alliance Develop.I just moved into a new house and have decided to go the smart light switch route instead of smart bulbs.

But if it works as well or nearly as wellthen it could easily be worth it to save potentially hundreds of dollars. I checked the forums here and it IS possible to set them up with SmartThings.

You need something to repeat signal for your sensors and zwave and zigbee switches are good at that. But requires you to flash the device. Gives you smartthings control and you can use the existing switch to turn the light on and off. And that includes all your Wi-Fi stuff, your phones, tablets, computers, TV boxes, etc. You can hit the limit pretty fast if you start using Wi-Fi for home automation.

Z-Wave vs ZigBee vs WIFI - Choosing a Standard: Your Smart Home Questions Answered

The limits for Z wave and zigbee are much higher. Light switches are usually really good way to get repeaters spread around the house. This looks fantastic for the price, but can it dim with SmartThings? You only have to replace one side of the 3-way, leaving the dumb switch on the other side. You might consider doing a mix of Zigbee and Z-wave switches. The ZEN26 switch and ZEN27 dimmer have lower amperage limits but can be installed in 3- and 4-ways without rewiring or special add-ons.

But it is on the way. First, many of these devices will work just as a regular physical wall switch whether the Wi-Fi is working or not. The Phillips hue bridge can work with both its own app locally and with the smartthings hub locally over your local Wi-Fi even if the cloud is not available. So it just depends on the specific model and what each manufacturer has decided to do.

Go with the Zooz. They will build you a solid Z-Zwave mesh. For your plugs, go with Zigbee with power monitoring. Very useful and will build you a solid Zigbee mesh. I have an older router but with over 50 WiFi devices connected. My WiFi network is definitely struggling but functions.

JDRoberts February 21,pm Not necessarily, it depends on the model. All Rights Reserved. We recently looked at the differences between Z-Wave and Zigbee, and which communication protocol makes the best choice for your smart home.

This enabled us to present a basic overview of each protocol and to compare them by category. In the simplest sense, Zigbee operates as a mesh network but what does that mean? Well, rather than each Zigbee-enabled device needing to connect to your home WiFi network, they communicate with a central hub instead. Signals are able to move easily from one device to another.

This is commonly called a hop. This allowed for the creation of personal-area networks with low-power digital radios. Zigbee used this network standard for the purposes of home automation. This makes it tailor-made for low-speed and low-cost communication between smart devices. WiFi allows you to transfer large swathes of data at high speeds but Zigbee comes into its own with much smaller amounts of information like instructions for device behavior.

Sensors, for example, require little bandwidth so Zigbee is a perfect protocol. To summarize, then, Zigbee is ideal for low data rate use cases where long battery life and security are paramount. These nodes perform a similar role to a wireless router by acting as small transmitters able to communicate with one another. This is the case even if one of the transmitters fails. With support for 65, nodes on a Zigbee network, all nodes act as repeaters and help out with the distribution of data.

This is where the term mesh network comes from.

If you want to read about mesh networks in more detail, check out our recent exploration of mesh WiFi systems. Zigbee networks, much like its rival Z-Wave, are secured with bit symmetric keys. This is the standard of encryption normally used by banks for their online operations. As a mesh network — more on that shortly — each device performs the role of repeater passing on the signal to the next device without needing to constantly communicate with the central hub. You can add up to 65, devices into a Zigbee network making it large enough even for commercial operations with smart switches throughout and obviously more than robust enough for even the largest smart home.

Requiring even less power than Z-Wave, Zigbee is the ideal choice for smart locks or sensors, devices where a power outage could be ruinous. More people are smartening up their gardensand with more remote workers, home offices are becoming the norm rather than the exception.

Zigbee is reasonable in terms of signal range, but certainly not world class. Indoors, you can expect ranges of 40 feet, but this is dependent on line of sight. Also, any obstacles like walls can obstruct Zigbee signals leaving you at times with an underwhelming 10 feet of reach.

Well, high frequencies cannot penetrate obstructions effectively. This is why 5GHz WiFi might lead to less interference than a crowded 2. We've got heating, lighting, cameras, sensors for just about everything, as well as new devices popping up every week to drag your home into a connected future. Over the past few years, we've moved from a position of disconnected systems into a world with emerging hubs, with big devices like the Amazon Echo and Google Home acting as hubs to tie all your connected services together, along with emerging platforms like Apple HomeKit and Samsung SmartThings.

So what role does Zigbee have to play in this brave new world of the smart home? Pocket-lint is here to supply all the answers. The whole idea behind the smart home it to have everything talking to everything, so you stay informed while your devices stay informed too. That might be that your lighting talks to your security camera or that your smart coffee machine turns on when you get out of bed.

The Internet of Things might be a fairly useless term, but essentially, that's what's happening - everything is connected, meaning that information can be shared and your life can be controlled without the need to visit each thing individually. All of these connected devices are being handled by automatic systems over a single network. The result? You have a smart home, thanks to smart applications and devices.

But there's just one problem: many companies make these different devices. In order to get them to work together on a single network, you have to use a single common language. That's where Zigbee comes in. Zigbee is based on the IEEE's All you need to know is that Zigbee is a specification that's been around for more than a decade, and it's widely considered an alternative to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for some applications including low-powered devices that don't require a lot of bandwidth - like your smart home sensors.

A typical example is when you have a Zigbee-enabled light bulb and a Zigbee-enabled light switch and you want the light switch to control the light bulb. With Zigbee, the two devices - even if they're from different manufacturers - speak a common language, so there's no barrier to communication. Zigbee does not focus on point-to-point communication, such as Bluetooth, where one high-powered device sends data to another high-powered device over a short range, put it operates in a mesh network, which is why it's great for the smart home.

In reality, for a customer putting together a smart home, a device that supports the Zigbee protocol may still be siloed, but as we move forward, with more devices wanting to act as the central controller, having fewer wireless protocols for your smart devices has a distinct advantage - especially if it means you can avoid having a huge collection of hubs connected to your router.

A mesh network is when a network connection is spread out among wireless nodes that can communicate with each other and share a network connection across a large area. Think of nodes as small transmitters that function in the same way as a wireless router. Zigbee's ability to support mesh networking means it can boost data transmission range and provide greater stability even when a single connected node fails and doesn't work.

With Zigbee, you will likely have a master coordinator node that controls other connected nodes - for example the Amazon Echo Plus. If one node fails for some reason and cannot communicate with a second node on the mesh network, the master node and second node may communicate by linking to a third node within range.

Every node acts as a repeater of sorts, and all nodes cooperate in the distribution of data - hence mesh network. So now you know what Zigbee is, it's worth running through devices that work with Zigbee.

Just because they use this standard of wireless networking doesn't immediately mean that things will work in harmony, after all, you might not have a controlling application that knows what all these devices are.

Just because a company uses the protocol, doesn't mean it will instantly play nice, however. Philips Hue uses Zigbee to connect its bulbs, but that doesn't always mean you can add in additional bulbs from a different manufacturer.

However, with the announcement of the Amazon Echo Plusthere's a big change in how we can approach Zigbee devices, because you can have Alexa controlling all these different types of devices, without needing the hubs or apps from each manufacturer.

The Echo Plus can be told to search for devices and would, for example, find a Philips Hue bulb and be able to control it, without needing any input from Philips at all. For example, the Echo Plus can control Zigbee devices directly, but will also let you enable skills to control devices running on other standards, like a Ring Video Doorbell, for example.
